#WordPress 3.9 Update: My Nightmare
WordPress 3.9 Update: My Nightmare
In the past whenever there has been an update for WordPress I have never hesitated and just did the update. Today that practice came back to bite me in the backside. After installing the update I lost almost all functionality on the admin side. I could not create a new post or edit a past post. Perhaps it is the template I use.. who knows. What I do know is that I have a fantastic host who addressed my issue immediately. Yes. It is Easter today. They had me back up and running within just a couple of hours.
This experience just confirms what I have always said, ‘Back up your data’. You never know when you will need it. This experience also emphasizes how important choosing the right site host is. I would have been in a world of hurt without their services today. So who do I use? Cartika Hosting.
So this blogger will not be updating to WordPress 3.9 any time soon.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter! Mine turned out well thanks to Cartika. π

Know exactly how that feels, Cheryl. In the past I lost the visual editor. Had to install another editor until WordPress came up with a new update.
Glad your host got you up and running swiftly.
Yeah, thank goodness for backups.
About a year or so ago, I did an update and it crashed my site. Like you, it didn't play well with the theme or one of the plug-ins I was using. Tech support helped it get up and running again from their last backup, and I only lost a few comments. After that, I always waited a few days or a week to do one of the major updates so any bugs could be ironed out. I've been lucky so far, and I do try to make a manual back-up of my site every week or two.
I am never going to be the first to jump on an update ever again. I have learned my lesson.
Sounds like a valuable partner, Catrika Hosting. I too have a wonderful webmaster, Theresa Wagar, who helps me with all issues like that.
My latest nightmare, Google penalty. And I'm planning a few blog posts about it.
I got penalized by Google with their last update. I have had a Page 3 rank forever and now it is a 2.
WOW, what a mess. I would have freaked out. I am so happy you were able to get it all sorted out in good time.
Yes, Susan, I know. But freaking out is not my style. I just get really focused on solving the problem. π
Support really does mean alot, doesn't it Cheryl? I don't know what I'd do without Sherryl Perry to keep my sites running smoothly. We have the odd glitch, but usually everything can he handled with a quick tweak or call to the host. Cheers, and here's hoping for smooth sailing from here on in.
Support really is huge. You might think you will never need it, and then something sneaks up and gets you when you aren't thinking about it. Big sigh… I love my support team!
The last issue I ran into was my host doesn't support jet pack use right now. I ended up spending a few days reworking new plugins to cover what I lost.
Phew , thank goodness it all turned out OK Cheryl, but what a nightmare, and especially on a Sunday. Sounds like you have a reliable host. I'm not familiar with them , but this is certainly a recommendation. And as you say. Backup , backup , backup!!!
I have been fortunate: last WordPress version I had trouble with was back around 2.7. Over the years, I've had to give up some favorite plugins because they no longer worked, but I've always found acceptable replacements.
Interesting Cheryl — I've recently updated to the new WP 3.9 version and noticed some changes and glitches but not to the extent of yours. Thanks for the added reminder to always backup. I try to and now I can see why. I'm glad your host got you back up and running again.
