And now…
Forrest Beck is a self-help author. He found the page on my blog for author interviews and sent me the following information. Great demonstration of self-help!
What is the title or working title of your current book?
Cultivating the Fine Art of Selfishness: Improving Community by Empowering Individuals
Please provide us with a brief synopsis of your book.
I teach others to be selfish, but in a positive way. If people effectively take care of themselves, they are 100x more able to sustainably care for and help others.
What genre does your current book fall under?
Self-help
Do you always write for the same genre?
No, but mostly.
Who or what motivates or inspires you to write?
My patients, my dad who died, people I continue to run in to on our travels around N. America.
Tell us about your writing background.
Liberal arts background, so I received some writing lessons from my English classes. Otherwise, I donβt have a writing background.
How long does it typically take you to write a first draft?
Two months of consistent work for my first (only to date) book.
Do you employ an editor to assist you in your writing process?
Yes.
Are you self-published or represented by an agency?
Published through Advantage Media, which was ironically an extreme disadvantage I am finding.
Do you have future projects we can look forward to?
Yes, numerous, though I believe the next is on Cultivating Love and Sex in Relationships that will be co-written.
Do you have any tips or advice to offer fellow writers?
Take your writing time seriously or no one else will take you seriously. But, also get over yourself. Learn through making a lot of revisions.
Is there anything else you would like to share with your potential readers?
Learn to market the hell out of your book regardless what anyone promises you. I have a lot more to share (don’t worry, not in a rant sense), but hopefully that would be explored in an interview.
Tell us how we can connect with you in the world of social.

It as interesting learning about forest's experiences as an author. As an author myself, I always learn something from everyone of these interviews. Thanks, Cheryl!
I am so glad you feel that way. I also love hearing from other authors.
Thanks so much Doreen. I have been over on your various sites reading anything from chocolate articles to your different publications and writing experiences. I love it. I was born in St. John's Newfoundland, by the way and need to get back up there at some point.
This is a new spin on self help. I like that – cultivating selfishness in a positive way. It's like, survival of the fittest with good manners! Love it.
Absolutely! I had to read it through to get the point. LOL
Thanks for the comments namirusso. I hope anyone who reads these realizes they can go to my website and download a free copy of my entire book.
It's so true that writer's need to learn how to get over shemselves… I was there years ago, but the transition back into writing full-time made it loud and clear I had some ground to make up in that area! I love the concept of his book. Even though I haven't posted reviews of a lot of nonfiction books, I am generally reading one at any given point in time.
You read so many books. I love to read but cannot come even close to the number of books you read each year. π
Another great interview. I always enjoy learning about what motivates others in their desire to write. π
Sometimes that alone inspires me. π
Thanks. I too enjoy being motivated by reading what all of you are up to.
I would be interested to know why he is unhappy with his publisher. Was it because they didn't promote the book?
Yeah, it would be interesting to find out that the issue is.
It all came down to deadlines and they were three weeks late which really altered my own marketing. I didn't expect any marketing on their end.
Although I am not a writer these are good tips especially get over yourself.
I agree. That one is good.
I do like the idea of the art of selfishness. As a child and as a girl, I found myself being taught to be good and think of others. Well, thinking of others isn't useful if one doesn't first take care of oneself! So the topic gets my attention.
It's funny Leora how early that mindset is inculcated in most of us. I think the lucky ones come to a realization that in order to help others, self-care or the selfishness that I promote, is essential.
Hi Cheryl!
I enjoyed reading your review of Author, Forest Beck. He is so right! Taking care of one's self is so important. It is definitely a trait that I have had to practice.
~Susan~
My view is that if you don't take care of you, how do you hope to take care of someone else? I need to be healthy to keep up with my grandchildren. π
Very cool, Forrest. NL is such a great province. I guess you'd noticed that I had been a co-author of the 1st edition of the Frommer's Guide to N&L . I did a post on the chocolate blog about the Newfoundland Chocolate Company. Not sure if you've tried their wares, but they are delish! Cheers, and nice to "meet" you.
Thanks JeriWB. Feel free to download a pdf version of my book for free at my site. I would enjoy your feedback.
Thanks for reading the interview that Cheryl was nice enough to conduct. I would love for you to download my book for free at my website Susan and give me feedback. Even better, if you have a story you would like to share on how you have practiced this it would be helpful to other women out there.
Thanks Susan.
Can identify very much with this statement Forrest made, I quote: "Take your writing time seriously or no one else will take you seriously. But, also get over yourself. Learn through making a lot of revisions."
