Best to plan what to do and make sure we get ethos, pathos and logos right. That's what Aristotle stressed in Rhetoric. Julius Caesar, Cicero and many of the other top Romans studied with Aristotle in Athens. Would Caesar still be remembered if he wasn't as skilled as he was in the art of persuation?
