“The time is always right to do what is right.”
By: Martin Luther King, Jr.
This quote’s meaning is obvious, right? But what if you take it one step further and apply it to decisions you make for yourself? Do you make decisions based on what is right for you, or do you make them based on what others expect from you? Food for thought…

I think one's inclination is to not necessarily do what's right for you. There's a lot of 'should' out there. Since I developed health issues , I've been much better about saying no. Good quote. Thanks Cheryl.
I am still not very good at saying no.
I like this quote. I don't always do what is "right" for me, I think I am more of I do what others expect of me.
Yeah, that's been my story too.
Great quote and question. I think the answer depends on what hat you are wearing at the time. For example, as a mother and grandmother, I would do what is right for my girls and not for myself. But then again, aren't most women conditioned to put others before themselves. I wonder what the average man's response would be.
Good point. I think we have to have a balance between what is right for our children and what is right for ourselves. It really would be interesting to get a man's point of view on this.
Many times we are more inclined to make the easy choice instead of the "right" choice. Making that right choice means that we have to cut something else out. Humans as a species tend to want to have it all (or maybe that is a product of our conditioning from television now). In our quest to have it all we never really become great at one thing, merely adequate at everything we allow to pull our attention.
Very good point! Mediocre is the word I think you are looking for.
Well now. that does open a can of worms. I can't say that I always do the best thing for myself, but I do try… LOL. Does that count?
Trying always counts! 🙂
I would think most people make decisions based on what they want, which doesn't necessarily mean it's right for them. Sometimes we make choices from the heart instead of the head. It's a debatable quote. We don't always know what is right for us. With that said, it's a great quote to reflect on the things we 'thought' were right for us, and how the plan changed.
Have a good one.
When I think about this I remember that your heart will never lie to you, but your head will. Something to think about.
Agree with you it's not an obvious quote at all. When I saw the headline that was my first impresion. Glad we agree:-)
Glad we agree. 🙂
Love the quote! It does make me think back on some decisions I have made in my past and I do often make decisions for the benefit of others before myself at times. I am a people pleaser and as a result it is difficult for me to make a decision that is supposed to benefit me if it means stepping on someone else's toes.
I understand the whole people pleaser thing. Sometimes it gets in the way of decisions that are right for us. 🙂
This is a concept I've been struggling with for, well, pretty much my entire life. My great-grandparents as well as my grandparents are all still alive and healthy and many times I find myself making decisions not based on what is best for me, but on what they would expect to me to do. So far, nothing has been detrimental to me and I've enjoyed most of my decisions, but I know one day that will have to change. I have begun holding myself back from opportunities by sticking with their expectations.
It's really difficult to make a break like that. It's like starting new traditions when you get married. Sometimes you have to leave some of the old traditions behind.
Given the scope of King's rhetoric, the important thing I take from this quote is that doing what is right means not hurting others, including yourself. If your actions make you feel doubt, then you are not doing what is right.
It all comes back to what your heart tells you. Your heart will never lie to you, but your head will.
It's the – what is right that is the more difficult. When I was doing corporate training around ethical leadership, activities would help people understand – it's easier to know what is right than to DO the right thing. Take the US Congress as an example.
I could not agree more. 🙂
Hi Cheryl: If we wait for the perfect time to do something or go somewhere, we may never get there. It's important to follow our instinct – and our heart. Thx for posting the quote.
P.S. You may want to correct the spelling of Mr. King's name. Cheers!
I have been staring at that misspelled word and did not see it until you pointed it out. It just goes to show that sometimes we see what we think something says rather than what it actually says. All fixed now! Thank you SO much!
This is a great quote. Sometimes we delay doing what's right because it's too painful — like telling someone you're sorry.
I agree. Sometimes even simple things like that can be difficult.
Love the quote. Sometimes that is easier said then done but nonetheless it's good to do the right thing.
Great quote. Its amazing how often people create more problems for themselves by procrastinating instead of just doing the right thing. It isn't always easy, but generally the consequences of putting it off are way worst.
These quotes are getting so addictive. This will definitely help me out at 5am Insanity Abs time. Or at 8 pm Guinness time!
I am SO not sorry you consider these quotes addictive! 🙂
