” In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.”

By: Bill Cosby

I think this quote says a lot. Fear of failure keeps people from doing so many things. The worst part of this is that by letting your fear of failure control what you do, you may never know the pleasure of doing what you love. I did not say that everyone else will love what you do. What I am saying is to pursue what you love in spite of what people think. Maybe your dream is to play in a band or be a stand-up comic. There are plenty of ways to pursue that dream. Want to be a ballroom dancer? Go take lessons. No one said you had to be a professional ballroom dancer. Do it because you love it. How does that saying go? Dance like no one is looking.

Don’t let what others think stop you from doing what you love. Me? I am a horrible dancer. But I dance because I like it. My view is that I dance for me. Let people laugh. I am doing what I love. Can those who are laughing at me say the same? Maybe they are wishing they had the courage to do what they love, too. Laughing at me takes the focus away from them.

Are you doing what you love? Are you working toward doing what you love? Is you desire to succeed greater than your fear of failure?

Boy howdy and amen. How true this is. Fear can be such a show stopper when we are trying the make a decision as to what to do and which direction. Then we have the detractors to contend with. πŸ™‚

    • Geek Girl says:

Making decisions? Listen to your heart. It will never lie to you. Detractors? Why are they detractors? Should you even be listening to them?

  2. Yeap!

Honestly think the main thing is to really strongly want to achieve something. It's not about positive thinking, visualizing or anything like that.

Whenever I really want somehing I always get it. It's fine if I also fear I may fail. What makes a difference is the super strong will. If it's not strong enough it doesn't work

    • Geek Girl says:

A strong resolve is very important. I would not discount anything that helps you achieve your goal, even if it is just thinking positive. Whatever helps you achieve your goal…. πŸ™‚

  3. I'm doing more of what I love now I am writing. My health holds me back at times, but I've lost my fear of that. It's a good quote though and I do think you really need to have that desire. With my writing, my main motivation is enjoying the process, but I would like to be published.

    • Geek Girl says:

Want to be published? What's holding you back? These days anyone can do it. πŸ™‚

Oh girl, I am totally doing what I love and not getting paid for it. Yet. But then again, I am just now starting to do what I love at work too, so I am getting paid for it there!!! Yay!!
And I like to dance too. πŸ™‚

    • Geek Girl says:

Hey – you are just getting started. You are so totally going to be doing what you love AND getting paid for it. I have no doubt. πŸ™‚

  5. Dan Meyers says:

Great post. I had three older brothers who were in the grades directly above me in school. Because of this, I'd never dance at the school dances because I thought they'd make fun of me (they never danced either). When they were all gone and I was a senior, I finally got out on the floor and had fun. Not only did I discover how I loved swing dancing, but I also convinced others I knew how to dance! Also, very relevant for my last post πŸ™‚ (or should I say my wife's)

    • Geek Girl says:

I loved your post! Isn't it interesting how we both had this concept come out at this time? My curiosity is going to get the better of me if we don't find out soon what your big plans are. LOL πŸ™‚

Great quote and what a coincidence – I was just telling my first grader to eliminate the negative words and make positive statements…no matter how terrible the school lunch is!

    • Geek Girl says:

Our words do make a difference. Make them positive so you can succeed when fear is staring you down.

  7. It's primarily fear of anything that holds us back. Great post Cheryl. Thanks!

  8. Geek Girl says:

    Thanks!

  9. Gina says:

Agreed. I immediately thing of mountain biking and how I am often too chicken to go off that jump or something. Otherwise, I am right there with you being a horrible dancer and loving it!

  10. JeriWB says:

My desire to succeed definitely keeps me going on my book and on the blog as well. Yet, in some ways, I've found that getting the chance to do what I love makes it possible for even more previously unheard of options to open in my life, which in turn bring more fear. It's a relentless cycle that takes extreme effort to say ahead of!

    • Geek Girl says:

We face fear everyday in one form or another. Is your resolve to succeed greater than your fear? My guess is yes!

  11. Geek Girl says:

Dancing is one thing you can be horrible at and still have a good time!

  12. I love the quote.I believe that the most successful people are those who are driven. Failure is not an option. They may experience setbacks but they just keep moving ahead. I admire them.

  13. Geek Girl says:

    You and me both! πŸ™‚
