Where Is Geek Girl?

By

Those of you who follow this blog will have noticed how quiet it has been here recently. My apologies. My day job has me working so many hours I barely have enough time to eat or sleep. The work schedule has left me pretty brain dead and grouchy with no energy for anything, even my passion – writing. I am taking a few days off in hopes of restoring some energy and finding that smiling Geek Girl I once knew.

As for my blogging I have decided that it’s time to change focus. Bethany from projectwhitespace has inspired me to return to the reason I started blogging in the first place – to write. Just how did she do that? She inspired me to set goals. My goals are centered around writing because I am a writer. This change in focus has started me down a path to rediscover the pure pleasure of writing. When I first started blogging I was writing for me. I did not have an audience nor did I write to get an audience. I wrote for me. It was simply to feed my writer’s soul.

Now everyone also knows that I am a tech Geek. I love technology. My blog has allowed me to blend my love of writing with my love of technology. Most recently what I found is that it has been more tech than writing. Lots of app reviews. That is all well and good, but it is not enough for a writer like myself. So I think the formula has to change.

One of my goals is to publish ebooks. Yes. That includes Kindle books. I believe in Pay-It-Forward so there will be free stuff. I also believe in making a living so there will be for sale stuff.

I recently found another blog that has inspired the writer in me. Jeff Goins at goinswriter. If you are a writer, I highly recommend visiting his site. He also practices the Pay-It-Forward principle, whether consciously or not. One of the things he says is that the word ‘aspiring’ needs to go bye-bye. I am not an ‘aspiring’ writer. I am a writer. Writers are born. I was born a writer and I know it in the depths of my soul. My doubts are the result of listening to fears.

I have changed my catch phrase from ‘Writing is my Passion. Technology is my Mistress.’ to ‘Writing is my Passion. Technology is the Enabler.’ I think it’s more fitting.

I also dug out those emails my instructor wrote to me during a college course I took last Fall and read them again. This class was taken online and I never actually met the instructor. So I value the feedback more because it is based purely on what I wrote. These emails tell me I am a good writer and what a pleasure it was to read my writing. Reading those emails gives me the confidence to believe.

So I am in the process of going through yet another metamorphosis. I am not sure where it will take me and this blog, but I know that in the end it will be good.

Geek Girl – I am a writer who loves technology. 🙂

There she is…. That is awesome news about your new direction. The new tag line is perfect. Life is all about changes and transitions. Where we start something, often turns out being something very different then we may have intended. Writing is in your soul. Follow your dreams and I will be right there with you my friend.

You are so right! Your childhood stories are a perfect example. It is my blogger friends who have given me the courage and support to actually say I am a writer and to follow that dream. We will all follow our dreams together. Woo Hoo! 🙂

How terrific that you are changing things up! I do that often. Not many times that I did so regretfully. More times doing it that it lead to terrific things. And thanks for sharing both Jeff Goins thoughts as well as your new catch phrase. Best to you!

New slogan is right on, very nice. I've already learned a lot from you, and I look forward to learning even more. I'm comfortable and familiar with technology, but I always like having friends like you who learns it first and are willing to teach me! Woo hoo!

Wow – you really sound motivated. Good for you. I always wondered where the "writing" pieces were going to come in because your blog posts are spot on. Love the new slogan, too. Definitely more positive.

Thank you! Like your new blog home. 🙂

  5. Great that you have been so busy working! It's good for us.

Agree with you that the word aspiring has to go and your new slogan and dirction makes sense to me. Had nothing to say about most of the new apps you wrote about since I am in a different country:-)

Go for it. Before you know it you are selling on Kindle!

Thanks! Working hard to get there. 🙂

I've found that blogging has been the most pleasant of surprises when it came to rediscovering myself as a writer. It not only made me motivated to write creatively again, it also made me think about the process of becoming a writer well-equipped for this day and age. The process of becoming holds such reader appeal and I will eagerly look forward to witnessing your new direction.
