When Different Worlds Collide
Have you ever hosted a foreign exchange student? If you have, then you know how challenging it is at first. If the language barrier is not an issue, then culture may be. My good friend and blogger Susan Cooper has hosted exchange students in her home and can tell you first hand some of the unique experiences you gain from everyday things. Everything form the word ‘stuff’ to celebrating Halloween.
Why do I bring this up now? It is on my mind because my first grandchild is arriving today. I have not met the other grandparents yet. Suffice it to say that we come from different backgrounds / worlds. I must admit that even the thought of meeting them is a bit disconcerting. You do not get a second chance to make a first impression. My fear is that I will blow the first impression. I know that fear of something is much worse than the actual something itself, but… easier said than done.
I know that when opposites attract it can be a beautiful thing. I also know that it can be like trying to mix oil and water. Big sigh… I am hoping for the beautiful thing. Wish me luck…

As it is with our foreign exchange students, the differences are what you learn to celebrate and love about the whole experience. You are such a kind and generous person, I know it will go well. Have a little faith. 🙂

Cheryl, it's rare that different worlds collide. Have lived, worked and integrated all over the world and it has not been problematic. You are an openminded and flexible person so you will enjoy it:-)
I can not wait to see photos of your beautiful little one. My dad use to host a lot of exchange students and it was always exciting and nerve racking in the same way. We were able to make some life long friendships but also had some that were harder t get to know.
