My father has reached the age where he can longer travel great distances. This presents a challenge when family members live in other states, like myself. My father has not seen my son for many years now. It is not for lack of wanting to, but rather distance and work schedules do not permit it. This year marks my father’s 80th birthday. His birthday falls on or around Thanksgiving. To celebrate this milestone in my father’s life I will be taking to the road for an in-person visit. My son is not able to make this trip with me so we did the next best thing, we made a video message. This message is even more special because my son has his own son now. I have included photos and videos of both so that my father can ‘see’ them without them being present.

This visit will keep me busy taking photos and sharing them with friends. You only turn 80 once!

Technology has been used by many to bridge the distance for all sorts of occasions. As technology advances so do our options for spending time together. Everything from Skype to Facetime to Google+ Hangouts. You don’t even need a computer, just your smart phone. This Thanksgiving holiday brings some nasty weather for many. If you can’t physically be present with those you love, all is not lost. Technology has you covered.

Stay safe everyone and enjoy the holiday!

I love our ability to reach distances without leaving our homes. All the technong that now available makes staying in touch much easier in unique way. I know your dad will greatly appreciate the video and pictures with you present.

It really is amazing how technology can help us be more connected, though at the end of a long way when hubby is away we usually just opt for voice rather than video conversations, but it's always nice to have the option of video chat.

  3. Agree with you completely, Cheryl.

Technology makes it easier to keep in touch with family and friends all over the world.

Love it when old friends I have not seen for decades find me on Facebook. We can look at pictures, videos and chat even if we are not in the same roon.

This is a part of social media and the internet that's absolutely phenomenal. We can also talk to each other for free on Skype.

  4. My daughter who lives in NYC went to Ireland in August, and I talked to – and saw! – her more often while she was overseas than I even did when she came down here to visit everyone thanks to Skype!

It's amazing how easy it was to keep in touch while traveling. We didn't even use foreign SIM cards because all we really needed was the internet and then we could send pictures, talk, and video chat. I was amazed that we could even do this in places like Cambodia and Laos.
