LEGO iPhone 5 Dock: Product Review

The folks over at The Daily Brick sent us an iPhone 5 dock in return for our review. Did I say LEGO? Yes. I did indeed say LEGO. This dock is made from LEGO blocks. The owner of this online store syas they decided to design a dock themselves when they heard that Apple was not going to make any more official docks. They make these for the iPads as well. So for all you LEGO fans out there, this one is for you!

They arrive in zip lock type bags.

There is a slip enclosed taking you to the instructions online.

Instructions

The instructions look like this.

Directions

Unless you go to the product page first,

you miss this critical instruction.

Product Page

If you can’t read it, it tells you WHEN to insert the cable.

The instructions do not give you this critical piece of information.

I purposely pulled the cable way out so that I could more easily demonstrate how it all fits together. When you are finished it should look like the first photo above.

Finished product photos

If you are at all challenged by looking at pictures to put something together, this may not be a product you want to test those skills with. I did find it frustrating that the instruction for WHEN to insert the cable was not part of the instructions pages themselves. I think that is a bit of a disconnect. I had it all together and then had to take it apart to insert the cable. Double work…

If you are a LEGOs fan, then you may very well enjoy this type of product. If you like quick and easy and have little time to spare, you may find that this product requires too much time and effort before it can be used.

I find lego a bit fascinating; how it goes together, the engineering and the simplicity of it all. I would have fun with this and then give to someone who would also enjoy it. 🙂

      I hear you. 🙂

Does it only come in white? I would want one that comes in all the random lego colors.

    • Geek Girl says:

It comes in black as well. I did not see other colors.

  3. This is absolutely the coolest thing. My son is a major lego freak and is always coming up with the most amazing creations. This is so cool. I agree with Jeri that one with "regular" lego block colors would be great. Can you get this on the lego website?

    • Geek Girl says:

Sounds like your son would love this. 🙂

This is a great idea and it makes me think of being able to get back in touch with the child within as you assemble it. Thanks for sharing this Cheryl.

    • Geek Girl says:

Yeah, you need their enthusiasm to put it together. 🙂

Hmm, that's interesting. It's definitely not for me (even though I loved legos) because it was just equal extra clutter on my desk… definitely a novelty item!

    • Geek Girl says:

Novelty for some. Necessity for others. LOL

I don't know if I'll build this but I do want to let everyone who owns an iPhone 5 know that Apple has recently started to sell a case for the phone with an auxiliary battery which I bought today. So glad not to have to worry about running out of battery life anymore.

I wonder if you are referring to the mophie? Great item to have especially if you travel much.

      • Jeannette Paladino says:

Yes, I am referring to the mophie.Sent from my iPhone
