Just Because…

By

Have you ever bought anything just because you wanted it? Not because you needed it, but because you wanted it? You bought it ‘just because’…

I don’t do it very often, but I did it today (now yesterday). As many of you know golfing is one of the activities my husband and I share. Because I have no depth perception I have special requirements for any club I consider using. I have a putter that I have used since the day I bought it. I have never considered using or buying another putter… until now.

I had taken my clubs in to be re-gripped. If you golf at all regularly, then you know the grips wear out and must be replaced. The golf professional who made my clubs (Yes, that’s correct. He made my clubs since I have special needs.) had a putter on display in his shop. My husband picked it up and showed it to me. I remarked about how sexy-cool it was. From that point on it was love from afar. We left my clubs there to have the new grips put on and went home.

We returned to the golf shop a couple of days later to collect my newly gripped clubs. Of course we ‘played’ with that sexy-cool putter again. And we repeated to ourselves, “We don’t need another putter. We like the putters we have.”

We talked about the putter all the way home. Once we got home I called the shop and asked for more details. This particular putter has an insert area for adding weights. This is how you customize the club for your preferred weight. Basically you take the putter and the weights to a practice green and you putt until you find the weight that works best for you.

So I explained this process to my husband. We decided to go back to the golf shop the next day and do the whole customization thing. The entire time we were going through the process my husband kept saying, “We do not need this putter. We like the putters we have. This one will be a reserve putter that we break out when we are ‘in the mood’ to try something different.” I just kept smiling…

We left the golf shop with a very sexy-cool putter that we absolutely do not need. But we wanted it, just because… Yes. That really is the reason. Just because.

How about you… have you ever made a purchase ‘just because’?

I do "just because" more often then I should. When It comes to garden tools, supplies or ornamentation I just can't resist. Especially ceramic mushrooms. I don't REALLY need any but they are just so darn cute. They always seem to find a way to my home. šŸ™‚

I so totally get that. LOL

I used to Cheryl when I worked in marketing in large companies and was on a big salary. I was known for going in to buy clothes and in end with so many bags to carry just because I could, although i didn't need them. Now having my own business I am more careful except where books are concerned as it is so easy to buy a few books at a time even if I have a some on my Kindle that I haven't even read.

I hear you. Things change when you own your own business. šŸ™‚

Hmmm, my just because buying weakness would definitely be Mexican folkart figurines. Since leaving Idaho, I have not seen as much of it, but just last weekend I bought a Day of the Dead skeleton from Cost Plus World Market. I just had to have it!

Yup, I SO get that. LOL

Oh, so now you are going to be lifting weights, too, huh? šŸ™‚
Do I buy things just because? Oh you bet. In fact, I do it too much and I'm getting it under control now. When you do it too often, you don't appreciate it as much. It's nice to hear this view from you because it reminds me of how I used to be. I used to be much better about this. And then when I bought something, it was special. Thanks for this reminder.

Hey now… I never said it was something I needed to get under control. LOL

When did I say I was going to be lifting weights? Not in my plans at all…

      • projectwhitespace says:

You are lifting weights because there are weights in your new putter. šŸ™‚

Oh good grief… no wonder had I no idea what you were talking about. LOL

Happy golfing, Once in a while it is okay to buy 'just because' it gives you a nice warm feeling.

I hate shopping, but leave me in a book store and well…….I do walk away with piles of books. Now, my book reviews ensure that I splurge less on books as I get so many book review requests.

I do have a weakness for travelling to remote areas, and this is where my money goes. In fact, travelling to remote areas within my own country ends up being more expensive than flying to a nearby exotic destination. Oh well. … travelling does broaden the mind, doesn't it?

    • Geek Girl says:

I am not fond of shopping either. Books are also one of my weaknesses. Not as bad with my Kindle as when I actually walked in to a bricks and mortar shop. I love to travel and spend too much when I do. But you are right, it does broaden the mind. šŸ™‚

So do you use the "just because" putter more often than you thought? Wish my "just because" items were in that "spontaneous item" budget. I don't NEED another computer but the Macbook Air is looking mighty sexy.

    • Geek Girl says:

Unfortunately the weather has been a bit uncooperative so the putter has only been used once so far. When it comes to technology in this household… well I guess I don't have to more. LOL
