Herbs For Health: Personal Care Products

When people begin their journey down the herbal medicine path many times it is coupled with reducing the use of chemicals in their household. Today I am going to share with you two recipes that my daughter-in-law uses for her family. One is for toothpaste and the other is for deodorant. Since no one in her family in emitting an unpleasant odor and no one is complaining of unpleasant side effects, you should have no problem with these recipes. 🙂

Toothpaste

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbs baking soda
  • 2 Tbs coconut oil
  • About 15 drops of essential oil. (L uses peppermint)
  • Container (Make sure it has a lid. Baking soda will absorb smells if left to open air.)

Optional

You can also add a bit of stevia, or other natural sweetener, if you’re used to a sweeter tasting toothpaste.

What it lacks in flavor it makes up for in cleaning power.

Deodorant

Ingredients

  • 3Tbs baking soda
  • 3Tbs corn starch
  • 3Tbs Coconut oil
  • 5 Drops Tea tree oil

Mix together all ingredients and pour into an emptied deodorant container and place in fridge. When applying use short gentle strokes. Keep in mind that this is not like the deodorant you purchase off of the store shelf, but once you get use to it you’ll love it! Note: You can use any container that works. It’s just handy to use a container already made for this purpose.

Since these recipes include essential oils they belong in this herbal series. After all, using herbal medicine is about getting and staying healthy naturally. Using fewer chemicals in our daily lives can only be a good thing in my view.:)

Thanks for these useful recipes, Cheryl! We are slowing transitioning away from chemicals and additives, and these are so simple that they'll be easy to implement.

  2. Very cool, Cheryl! Thx for sharing both these recipes. I've been really conscious about trying to use a natural deodorant product, but have found that most of them don't work. Perhaps this will be the one that will! And with respect to toothpaste, this certainly sounds pure and easy. Cheers!

I"ve been using clinical strength deodorant for years now, so I wonder if the homemade version would be as effective? It's awesome how so many products can be made a home if one is willing to do the work.

  4. I will have to check out the toothpaste. Many commercial brands are too sweet for me.

Cheryl- I make my own toothpaste but I add parsley in addition to the peppermint to keep breath fresh. I also add CoQ10 which also helps irritate gums.

    For deordorant I use
Corn Starch and Baking Soda which will neutralize odor while Grapefruit Seed Extract helps help bacteria, lavender to soften the arms. The tree oil and coconut oil are also good idea.

  6. Wow awesome. I love being able to make things at home. I will try this. 🙂

Very cool, thanks for posting. I like the idea of making your own toothpaste because most of it is filled with chemicals, or you have to pay $10 a tube for more natural stuff from Whole Foods!! I stopped using anti-persperent deodorant because of the aluminum is supposedly contains, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to switch to home made yet 🙂

  8. Those are really great ideas, Cheryl. Have to admit I never even thought about doing my own toothpaste and deo.
