Perhaps you remember your mother, or grandmother, telling you to ‘eat your oatmeal’. Although they may not have known all the details as to ‘why’ oatmeal is good for you, they got the main point. Eating oatmeal, or porridge, as some refer to it is not only good for you it can soothe you as well. Many find they can eat oatmeal when they are ill when nothing else will stay down.

Why are oats good for you? They contain protein, calcium and B vitamins, among other things. The only known safety factor is if you are allergic to it. No other known cautions. They are as safe as it gets.

Oats are good for both humans and farm animals. Oat straw is a commonly used feed because it is so nutritious. Oats help build strong bones, teeth, hair and nails. They are heart-healthy and calming. The very best herbalists are fond of oats.

With oats being so naturally good for you, why not eat them whenever the opportunity arises? I am thinking oatmeal cookies for the holidays. Yum! 🙂

I never really thought about why Aveeno was called that, but now it makes sense 😉 Best lotion ever. Oatmeal isn't so bad either…

This is a true story. When I was a child my mother made the lumpiest oatmeal known to mankind. She was a good cook, but not oatmeal. I would refuse to eat it and she wouldn't let me up from the table until I did. It was a battle of wills. She would threaten me, "You eat that or I'll dump it on your head!" Then one day she did! I'll never forget running down the basement stairs where my father was puttering around and he actually laughed. What a gooey mess!

    • Geek Girl says:

So did that experience turn you off of oatmeal entirely?

      • Jeannette Paladino says:

Yes, I've never eaten oatmeal again!

    • Geek Girl says:

I favor oatmeal cookies as well. Add some chocolate chips and it's heaven!

  6. Oatmeal is a good choice. Actually so are all flours, apart from wheat. The latter should be avoided since it's not good for our health. Candida, for instance, thrives on wheat.

    • Geek Girl says:

Wheat and candida are a very bad mix indeed.

One of my favorite breakfasts is oat grouts, which can be cooked overnight in a slow cooker. To each individual serving add fruits and nuts of your choice, a splash of almond milk, and you really have a power breakfast.

Be careful, you're going to anger all of the paleo dieters!! I'm with Jon on this one, my favorite way to eat oatmeal is in a cookie… along with some dark chocolate chips
