Habits & Personality Traits

By

Habits_Traits Did you ever wonder where that habit of saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ came from? That’s an easy question, right? You were brought up that way. What about that special way you walk, or the way you hold your fork when you eat, or the way you hold your hands when you must sit still, or the way you squeeze the toothpaste from the tube? Simple things you don’t even think about. Children watch and they mimic everything you do, not just what you say.

As we grow we develop our own way of doing things, but really only to a certain extent. Some things we hold on to consciously or not. Like the way you walk. That is probably not something you will change. If you have a tendency to walk on the ball of your foot first because that is how your mother walked, you will probably always walk that way.

One of my traits has been to be analytical. As a result of the way I was raised I am analytical to the point of annoyance. Try as I might this is not something that can be changed. I can change the extent to which I analyze something and therefore the impact, but not the fact that I am analytical. I have learned to control it so that I am not paralyzed to the point of inaction because of it. Yes, you can be paralyzed to inaction by being too analytical. You go through a process of – What happens if I do this? What happens if I do that? The analysis continues until the subject of the analysis is no longer even an option to be acted on, thus you were paralyzed to the point of inaction and may very well have missed a good opportunity. It can be a vicious cycle.

It has taken me many years to learn how to deal with this annoying trait. On a positive note it is this very trait that has helped me acquire and retain the current position I have as an analyst with my employer. It truly is a trait that is like a two-edged sword. Sometimes you like it. Sometimes not so much.

What habits or traits do you have that have had an impact on you?

Gosh, that pretty easy. I am a perfectionist. On top of that i am obsessive compulsive about it. Like you it was what created a successful career for me, but I could be very annoying when things weren't what I thought they should be. I gave my all and expected nothing less in return.
