Geek Girl Readers Recommend Apps

By

KingRing loves to hear what apps our readers are using and why. Today we are going to share some of those we have received. These apps have versions for both Android and iPhone. Very cool…

KingRing

Urban Spoon – An app to help you find restaurants. My understanding is that you can just shake your phone and it will provide you with a restaurant in your location (where your phone is at that moment). Keep shaking until you find one you like. You can choose to see a list as well. It works in the US, Canada, and most major cities in the UK, and Australia. You can find the Android version here. You can find the iPhone version here.

ShopSavvy

ShopSavvy – Aim your phone camera at the bar code and wait for the beep. It will provide you with a list of local and online prices for that product. The Android version 5.0 includes ShopSavvy Wallet which allows you to add a credit card to shop at retailers like Walmart and Target with just one ‘slide’. Want to try this app? You can find the Android version here. You can find the iPhone version here.

FlightView

FlightView – Real time flight tracking. Provides you with alerts for changes in flight status. You can share your trip itinerary. Lots of other goodies included. You can find the Android app here. You can find the iPhone app here. Please note that these are the FREE versions. There are also paid versions available.

Flashlight

Flashlight – This is a great app! It uses your phone’s camera flash. I cannot tell you how many times I have used mine when a flashlight was not handy or convenient. Get your Android app here. Get your iPhone app here.

KingRing

KeyRing Rewards Cards – Store all your loyalty and rewards cards in one app on your phone. Get coupons, find stores, and share cards with family members. Free online backup so they are never lost! Get your free Android app here. Get your free iPhone app here.

Have you tried any of these apps? What do you think of them? Do you have apps that you would like to share with us?

I have some sort of flashlight on my android – I think it's Tiny Flashlight. I downloaded it after vacation, when we could have used it. Haven't had the opportunity to use it since. Maybe on our next vacation.

What do I use on my phone? I often click k-9, which is what I use for mail. My kids use Temple Run a lot (game). Does Four Square count? Another of my favorites. I tend to use my phone for what I usually read online (Google Reader, Google+, Twitter, Facebook).

I LOVE the KeyRing one! A new friend of mine introduced me to it. The thing with that one is, I've also had to carry some of my annoying keyring cards because not all places have up-to-date scanners to read it from my iPhone.

    Thanks!

I have not used the KeyRing one yet, but I have it downloaded and I am going to try it. I do understand the drawbacks at this point, but I am going to view this as both a time saver (for those places where I can use it), and the fact that the cards are backed up online so I don't have to worry if they are lost is valuable in itself. 🙂

  3. I tried downloading Flashlight to my iPhone but it doesn't support 3G. I haven't used it much but the Amazon PriceCheck app enables you to compare the price of something you want to buy with Amazon's price. I do use Urban Spoon. Very handy.

WOW!! Thanks for this posting. Keep them coming. I hardly have any apps at all on my droid, I do happen to have the flashlight though. 🙂 I love the other 3 you mentioned. I'm never really sure where to go to get apps, or which ones to choose and I'm borderline technologically illiterate.

Update – – Buy Me A Pie was free for a short promo period but is back to regular price of $2.99 in iTunes Store.. But it is well worth it 🙂

Too bad we missed it when it was free. Thanks for the update. :)Sent from my iPad

Great apps for sure!! I generally like simple apps that simplify my life… something that I'll use enough to make it worthwhile. Looking forward to further reviews!

  9. Adrienne says:

I've used Flashlight, that thing is BRIGHT! I love Pulse and Pop Candy to entertainment/cultural news; Pandora for music; Dropbox for file storage; eQuotes since I'm a quote junkie; iTriage for medical info; Color Note for to do lists and Google Sky Map for a view of the night sky wherever I am.

There's so many of them, it's hard to pick favorites sometimes!

  10. keepupweb says:

Cheryl, I love the KeyRing Rewards Card app. Now, if only I had a smart phone! 🙂 (I know there are people reading this saying, you don't have a smart phone? I have my reasons.)

    • Geek Girl says:

Sherryl – I went for a long time without a smart phone. I was probably one if the last die-hards to give in and get one. Now that I have it I cannot live without it. I suspect that I know why you don't have one, but I am leaving that to you. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by. I haven't seen you for a while. 🙂

      • keepupweb says:

I've been crazy busy lately and have been falling woefully behind on visiting and commenting on blogs. I actually talked my husband into buying an Android. He's on the road so much and I seem to be chained to my desk chair lately. When I need to take a peek to see how a site looks on a mobile device, I grab his phone. Other than that, my main reason for not investing in a smart phone is that I feel too "connected" already. It's a relief to me to be out and about without an Internet connection. 🙂

  11. Great apps Cheryl! Would have loved to have the flight app when I was travelling almost non stop all over the world. Catch is it wouldn't have worked in all countries:-)

    • Geek Girl says:

Thanks Catarina! Unfortunately there are few 'perfect' apps out there, but sometimes having something that works part of the time is better than having nothing. 🙂

  12. Susan Cooper says:

I love the list. I use the flash light and love it. My favorite travel app is Tripit (the free version). It really helps me go paperless when traveling. The other tow I will need to check out. 🙂
