Choosing a #Pillow: Not so Simple

By

Choosing a pillow seems like a simple and straight forward thing to do. For some that may be true. For people like me, it’s anything but simple…

I have used a Petite Core pillow for many years. It is actually designed for a child. Yes. You read that right. It is designed for a child. Adult pillows push my head up to far and make for very uncomfortable sleeping.

As you know I have just returned from a vacation in Jamaica. The resort we stayed at actually had pillows that worked well for me. I slept great! When I returned home I found that I was waking with headaches. I was using the same petite core pillow, but it was no longer comfortable for me.

My husband told me that I had to do something to resolve this headache issue. He recommended that I visit a bricks and mortar shop where I could physically try out different pillows to find one that would work for me. I followed his advice and boy am I glad I did.

I tried all kinds of pillows, everything from gel to memory foam to fiber fill. You name it. I tried it. I had almost given up when the sales person brought me a pillow that contained memory foam ‘pieces’. It literally is comprised of memory foam pieces – bits – and it was compact. I tried it. I got up and walked away. I came back and tried it again. I turned and turned and still I found it comfortable. I had found my new pillow!

The down side to this new pillow is that they are only sold in pairs. Big sigh… I purchased them anyway.

After using this pillow for a couple of nights now I could not be more pleased. I highly recommend visiting a shop that lets you try before buying. If you don’t, I can see how you could end up investing a lot of $ just trying to find the right pillow; not to mention all those unrestful nights sleeping.

Have you found the experience of purchasing a pillow challenging? What did you do to find the right one for you?

Until next time…

Years ago I got the most comfortable pillow that took away my every morning neck ache. I WISH I had bought two because now I cannot remember where I bought it. So good for you in buying two because you are prepared when you will need a replacement. In my personal pillow experience, none of them last forever Cheryl.

No. They don't last forever. The key may be making sure the one pillow that works for you is readily available in the future.

I cannot get over how import the pillow thing has become with age:) I recently purchased the memory foam gel neck pillow and could NOT be more pleased. But that was some day in the mattress store. I agree that to find a store where they will let you try before you buy is key! Those guys were so patient with me:) Thankfully, this was a singular item and a bit pricey. But I have enough things interrupting my rest…thankfully my pillow is no longer one of them!

The sales person I worked with was very patient. She also knew her subject matter inside and out. It was actually a good experience that ended well. Whew… The pillow I chose was most definitely not cheap, but much better than waking with a headache everyday.

I can definitely relate to adventures in pillows. In the past, hubby and I have returned pillows four or five times in the search for decent ones. We finally settled on some kind of synthetic down pillows from Kohl's which were surprisingly cheap. They're not great, but they'll do. We're actually looking into getting a Temperpedic (sp?) mattress and pillows to go with it. We really like the memory foam mattresses we've slept on in Marriott's, and the recent pillows we tried in a store were pretty awesome. The mattress we're looking at is a "cool" mattress what stays a few degrees cooler than typical memory foam, but they haven't rolled out pillows like that yet.

The memory foam bits my pillow is made of is actually cooler because it is bits. It is very compfy. The key is finding what works for you personally. Everyone is different and has unique needs.

I can relate to pillow problems over the years. I bought some super expensive memory foam pillows, luckily there was a sale but still expensive. They are awful. Like sleeping on a foam rock. Just wondering, Cheryl, what are they covering the pillows with and, hopefully, changing in between all these customers trying them out? 🙂

    • Cheryl says:

They have covers they use so you can try them without worry about catching something from the previous tester. Pillows are as unique and different as the people who use them.
