Blogging For A Purpose

By

Does your blog serve as a destination, or a vehicle to a destination? It’s an interesting question. I think it depends on how you view the destination. When I say destination I mean goal.

Some bloggers might say the blog is the destination because that’s where their sales emanate from. They sell products right there on their blog.

Some bloggers may use their posts to wet the appetite of potential buyers. You can see this in action when you visit Bindu Blogs. She wets your appetite to visit her store. Her blog is the vehicle to get people to her store.

A blog can simply be a outlet for expression. The blogger may have no intention of ever making money from it.

For a writer like myself a blog can serve as a platform to hone your craft before taking that next step and publishing books. It gives them an opportunity to build an audience who will not only be interested in reading their books, but also will tell their friends and actually help promote those books. Susan Cooper at Finding Our Way Now comes to mind. Her stories have developed quite a following, myself included. Those short story books will sell well.

If you are like Dan Meyers at Your Life Their Life, you will take all that expertise from all those posts and compile it in to a book that everyone will benefit from. A vehicle to a destination.

A blog can serve many purposes. I have only touched on a few. For me it has served as a proving ground for honing my writing skills and to gain the confidence that I can write publicly.

Next step: publish books on Amazon Kindle. Hint: Susan Cooper and I have one coming out soon. Stay tuned…

What purpose does your blog serve?

    Awe… Thank you!

  7. Very interesting post. Sometimes the journey is as important as the destination – that's what it is for me. Right now it's just a way to write about the things that really interest me. Hopefully, others will agree.

Hi- Nice article. First I think knowing the reason you blog is definitely worthy so it can help you define your path. That being said… I am not sure where mine fits in to the purpose right now other than documenting my little fantasy of chocolate and sharing it with others!

    • Geek Girl says:

Hey – you write about chocolate. That's enough for me. LOL

The journey is every bit as important as the destination. When I started this journey I had no idea where it was going to lead me. You must keep on writing and enjoying the journey. 🙂

Thanks for the shout out, and I think I may borrow your term – a vehicle to a destination! I can't wait to see the Cheryl/Susan ebook… and it's good inspiration for me to finish mine!

    • Geek Girl says:

Yeah, I keep waiting for your announcement and all I get is silence. Waiting….. 🙂

I'm with you in building a platform through the blog – wish me luck in trying to find that precious writing time, however. So you have something in the works about to come out, huh? Can't wait to see it.

    • Geek Girl says:

I would say that you will need to find time when the boys are in school or asleep. 🙂

My blog's purpose evolved as I started to write book reviews that actually made writers ask if I could edit their work. I have the skills and am now working on gaining experience. Then I added the interviews and have realized I can learn a lot from those I interview, but that it also brings back some of the feelings I miss from being in the classroom. That covers Monday and Friday posts… my Writer Wednesday posts are still a little iffy. I would love to incorporate stories the way Susan does 😉

My blog has evolved as well. It's been a real learning experience. Susan's stories are the best. No doubt about it. 🙂
