Black #Cohosh: Cimicifuga racemosa

Today we are showcasing another ‘at risk’ herb. I encourage you to visit United Plant Savers to learn more about ‘at risk’ herbs and how you can help.

Black #Cohosh is basically used for women’s issues. It does not work for everyone and it is not appropriate for everyone. Herbs are a very personal thing. Some herbs will work for you and some will not. It is important to either consult an herbalist regarding your needs, or take baby steps if you choose to experiment on your own.

Phyllis Light discusses Black #Cohosh in the following video.

As Phyllis notes, she has clients where this herb works and those for whom it does not work.

I did an internet search on this herb and found some cautionary notes. as well as some contradictory notes. It is extremely important to do your research before trying any herb you are not already familiar with.

My goal in showcasing this herb to bring attention to its ‘at risk’ status. I will be doing the same for others in future posts.

Have you used this herb? Did it help you? Is there something else you use?

In other words, it's an herb for dare devils!

  2. I've read about Black Cohosh before as being good for hot flushes etc. and I can't remember what the potential downsides are. The video wouldn't play for me. I wonder if in these posts you could , as some people do, give a summary of the video . Not everyone has the time to watch an 8 min. Video either. Just a suggestion. Thanks for reminding me of this herb:-)

I've been using a liquid version of cohosh for years…it has helped me! On the other hand, it did not help my girlfriend at all! I am aware of the at risk status, but as with all homeopathic aids, it pays to research the manufacturer as well!

I'd never heard of this herb, so I can say I learned something new today.

  5. I've not used this because of the cautions associated with it. On a side note: I do find it difficult to understand how we can let anything go extinct because of our carelessness. 🙂

  6. Believe black cohosh was part of a herbal cocktail I bought in when I lived in the Middle East. If so, it caused me no harm. If it, or one of the other ingredients worked for me, I can't say.

  7. Thank goodness for the benefit of herbs, Cheryl! I take a red clover blend for my menopausal symptoms and it works well for me. So much better than taking drugs or other unnatural things.
