Bingo: The Game

Do you remember playing Bingo as a child? I think my first experience at playing Bingo was in grade school. When you could not play outside the teacher would bring out the Bingo supplies and we would play for the recess break. I can’t remember what we received as prizes, but it was always a lot of fun. I remember as a teenager going to community Bingo events with my older married sister when I would stay with her during the Summer. It was a great way to spend time together and, if you were lucky, actually win some money. We never had just one card to play. Each person always played multiple cards to increase our chances of winning. We came prepared with the marking sticks / markers as well as spares. You had to be quick or risk missing something and then someone else wins instead. It was great family time.

Today it seems that this game, like so many others, has taken up residence on the Internet. Rather than going to a local event you just log in right from home and play. A good example would be FoxyBingo. They have taken this game to a whole new level and are doing quite well with it. I am not sure just how it all works, only that it seems to be working very well for them. It is a UK site. According to Wikipedia: Bingo (UK) a game using a printed ticket of 15 numbers on three lines; most commonly played in the UK. Bingo (US) a game using a printed ticket of randomly generated 5×5 numbers; most commonly played in the USA and Canada. So there is a difference between UK & US. I suspect that it is played much the same way. FoxyBingo has created a site that is clearly designed for fun.

I did a search of the app store on my iPad for Bingo and it brought up lots of results, including educational apps. It seems that whatever form you like your Bingo in, there’s an app for that. Good thing too. That means my grandchildren will not miss out on playing Bingo.

I downloaded a Bingo app awhile back, but haven't really played around with it yet. I do know people search for Bingo a lot on the internet because one of my old lesson plan posts called People Bingo (an introduction activity) has thousands of hits. I get more search traffic off that one post than anything else I've posted in over a year. Which is a bit frustrating since I don't post lesson plans anymore…

When I taught, bingo was always a good game for the kids. We had bingo spelling, math and science. It was great fun for the kids and they learned something by playing the games. ๐Ÿ™‚
