Beam Me Up And Make My Life Easier

Last week I went to see the new Star Trek movie with spouse and our good friends. I always tell Spouse that I go to see these movies for him, but he is well aware that I enjoy them as well.

One of the things I really enjoy about science fiction/futuristic movies is the imagined technologies that make life easier. In fact, the other day as I was mowing the lawn and enjoying the smell of the grass screaming, I was thinking about the different technologies in the Star Trek movies. I was wondering which of the technologies I would like to have the most.

For me, it is the transporter. Don’t get me wrong – for the good of the world in general I think the food replicator to end hunger or the ability to heal and cure people with the medical tricorder would be the best to have. But for me personally, a transporter could improve my life immensely in many ways:

1) Probably the single biggest issue in married life for Spouse and I used to be the conflict between two careers. And the problems were mainly due to us wanting/needing to be in different geographical places to carry out our career goals. If I could have just said “beam me up” to get to work everyday, this would have been a non-issue, and we wouldn’t have had to move 4 times in 6 years.

2) I fortunately can say that I don’t regret a lot in my life, or feel like I wish I could have done things differently. However, one thing that saddens me a lot is the fact that I wasn’t with my sister when she was dying. I got the call in the morning when we were living in Wisconsin, and there was no way I could get to New Hampshire in time. I probably would have done anything that day to get myself transported over.

3) Traveling with 5 kids on an airplane is challenging, to say the least! It’s super expensive, extremely tiring and very nerve-racking. I am always like a frenzied chipmunk trying to keep the kids occupied because I don’t want to be THAT FAMILY. Seating arrangements can be a nightmare, particularly if we get bumped to another flight and the kids’ seats are scattered all over the plane. Never mind the amazing amount of stuff I have to try to cram into as few bags as possible to avoid fees. Although transporting might be expensive, it would be worth the money!

4) And then there would be those days when I think I can’t just take another minute of the kids. Would it really be so bad to beam them away? I mean, just like for a few hours or so? Of course I would beam them somewhere totally safe and maybe even where they would have some fun. I wouldn’t want to get in trouble for transporter abuse.

As you see, I have many reasons for needing a transporter. And as to that nasty business of having all of my molecules rearranged, I think it would be well worth it! (Maybe I would even come out better looking!)

My Star Trek device must have would be the food synthesizer, although if I had one I might not be able to stop myself from ordering up a million tasty instant treats.

It would love that too. I could then actually get my husband to travel a bit more. He hates the whole process of air travel to the point that he want go without much stress and angst.
